Internship Opportunity at Baker Risk in El Segundo, CA

Baker Engineering and Risk Consultants, Inc. (BakerRisk, www.bakerrisk.com), is a Texas-based technology leader in assessing the consequences and risks associated with potentially catastrophic events including explosions, fires and toxic material releases.  BakerRisk uses advanced methodologies and tools to predict consequences and design mitigation measures, providing services to industries and government organizations around the world.

BakerRisk is seeking an engineering co-op/intern to assist Project Managers in their Los Angeles (El Segundo) office on the analysis and design of structures to resist the effects of explosions.

Responsibilities

Assist project managers and technical staff with project work, business development activities, and organizational tasks. May be called upon to perform routine engineering calculations, review documentation, research technical issues, prepare/edit presentations and reports, organize files, review/write software, etc. Support a staff of four engineers consulting in the areas of blast resistant structural design and explosive effects, primarily for U.S. government clients. Learn engineering software as needed to perform specific assigned tasks.

Qualifications: Required

  • Civil/Structural or Mechanical Engineering major
  • Completed sophomore year (junior or senior level student)
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • S. citizenship
  • Familiarity with 3D modeling software (SketchUp)
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Access)

 Qualifications: Preferred

  • Competence in oral and written communication skills
  • Matlab, C++, or C# programming skills
  • Detail-oriented

Terms

Full time (40 hr/wk) preferred, but part time acceptable. Position is open for immediate start. Duration of internship to extend minimum through September, but may be extended beyond if mutually agreeable.

At Honda Performance Development in Santa Clarita, CA, we are looking to fill 2 internship Simulation Engineer positions, starting from April or May 2018. Location of work is Santa Clarita, 30 miles north of Los Angeles and duration of internships should be 6 or 12 months.

Application are expected from talented recent graduates and final year Master students, with some experience in using commercial simulation tools for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA).

One position is open in the field of race car aerodynamics and thermodynamics simulations. Typical CFD applications include aerodynamics development of racing cars, heat transfer and CHT simulations for brake cooling, flow through heat exchangers and engine compartment flows.

The second position is available in the field of structural dynamics simulations. Typical FEA application fields include Composite Materials, Durability, Strength Analysis, Vibration Analysis and Topology Optimization.

Now accepting applications for the 2018 Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO) Summer Internship Program

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO) Summer Internship Program provides opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to participate in projects at federal research facilities located across the country focused on helping DNDO meet its mission of “implementing domestic nuclear detection efforts for a managed and coordinated response to radiological and nuclear threats, as well as integration of federal nuclear forensics programs.” This program will prepare a diverse, highly talented, educated, and skilled pool of scientists and engineers to address issues related to national security and nuclear detection and to enhance the future scientific and technical workforce to be both knowledgeable and trained in fields of specific interest to DNDO.
Undergraduate students receive a stipend of $600 per week for ten weeks plus reimbursement for travel expenses up to $1,000.
Graduate students receive a stipend of $700 per week for ten weeks plus reimbursement for travel expenses up to $1,000.

Science Policy Fellowship Program We would like to request your help in spreading the word about a fellowship opportunity for your undergraduate or master’s students. The IDA Science and Technology Policy Institute (STPI) provides a unique opportunity for recent graduates to become actively involved in the science policy arena through the Science Policy Fellowship Program. This two-year, paid fellowship provides recent bachelor’s degree recipients with a unique opportunity to use their critical thinking and analytic skills to work on a diverse set of challenges in science and technology (S&T) policy areas, including space sciences, innovation and competitiveness, energy, health and life sciences, national security, biotechnology, information technologies, and STEM education. Fellows will be involved in collaborative research with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) and other Federal Government organizations, such as the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. This is a full-time position and is only open to recent recipients of a bachelor’s degree (conferred within the May 2016 – July 2018 timeframe), including recipients of a master’s degree if their bachelor’s was received in or after May 2016. Candidates with degrees in engineering, life sciences, physical sciences, social and behavioral sciences, computer science, mathematical sciences, statistics, and learning sciences are encouraged to apply.
