IDA | Career Opportunities

Who are we?

The Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) is a not-for-profit corporation that operates three Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs): the Systems and Analyses Center (SAC) located in Alexandria, VA; the Centers for Communications and Computing (C&C) located in Princeton, NJ, La Jolla, CA and Bowie, MD; and the Science and Technology Policy Institute (STPI) in Washington, DC. IDA manages these FFRDCs for the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the National Security Agency, and the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the Executive Office of the President and the National Science Foundation, respectively. Our sponsors turn to us for two very important reasons: our independence and our freedom from conflict of interest. IDA provides objective analyses of national security issues and related national challenges, particularly those requiring extraordinary scientific and technical expertise.

Why work at IDA?

IDA has a high-quality, interdisciplinary research staff blending long-standing experience and current knowledge to provide both corporate memory and state-of-the-art expertise for our sponsors. IDA researchers are educated in engineering, the physical and life sciences, mathematics and statistics, and computer science; others in economics, political science and other social sciences. Government sponsors ask IDA’s help in understanding a wide variety of problems. For each project, research teams possessing the requisite scientific and technical skills are assembled from across the company. IDA’s flat organization and culture of internal collaboration allow researchers to easily and collegially interact with each other and the Institute’s leaders.

IDA offers a competitive salary, an excellent benefits package, and a superior professional working environment. IDA offers the opportunity to affect key national programs while working on fascinating and challenging technical issues. Research positions require excellent analytical skills, the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and the ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Qualifications

  • IDA seeks highly qualified researchers with strong academic backgrounds, preferably with a Ph.D.
  • We are interested in a variety of disciplines including Chemistry, Bioengineering, Biological and Life Sciences, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Operations Research, Physics, as well as Social and Behavioral Sciences.
  • US Citizenship is required. Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
