UCLA MAE Assistant Professor Lihua Jin was awarded the 2023 ASME Sia Nemat-Nasser Early Career Award.

Prof. Jin was selected to receive the 2023 ASME Sia Nemat-Nasser Early Career Award “for unraveling coupled non-equilibrium processes in stimuli-responsive soft materials to achieve programmable shape morphing and actuation, developing novel mechanical metamaterials for reusable energy absorption and reversible shape transformation and furthering understanding of the stretchability of electronic materials and devices.”

Formal presentation of the award, which consists of a $3,000 honorarium, a bronze medal, a certificate, and a travel supplement not to exceed $750, will take place during the 2023 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE), October 29 – November 3, in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The ASME Sia Nemat-Nasser Early Career Award was established in 2008 by the Materials Division as a divisional award. In 2012 it was elevated to a Society award to recognize early career research excellence in the areas of experimental, computational, and theoretical mechanics and materials by young investigators who are within 10 years after their Ph.D. degree, with special emphasis placed on under-represented groups.
