Overview

The Graduate Student Affairs Office of the Henry Samueli Mechanical and Aerospace School of Engineering provides a complete range of services for all M.S. and PhD students, as well as for prospective students.  Our office provides many services for new and continuing graduate students.

We provide a variety of services such as academic counseling, admission process, degree conferral, requirements, to approximately 271 graduate students.  We also administer the process of all fellowship funding.

Our mission is to educate the nation’s future leaders in science and art of mechanical and aerospace engineering.  Further, we seek to expand the frontiers of engineering sciences and to encourage technological innovations while fostering academic excellence and scholarly learning in collegial environment.

MS DEGREE GRADUATING STUDENT CHECKLIST:

If you are planning on being on Filing Fee, Leave of Absence, Withdraw, In Absentia or filing for your MS degree this spring 2016 quarter the deadline for submitting these required forms is April 6th, 2016.

Please review the MAE MS degree program requirements and complete the following required forms listed below for your MS degree: (It is the student’s responsibility to file advancement to candidacy forms for masters’s degree in the major department no later than the second week of the quarter in which the student expects the award of the degree.)

Filing Fee Urgent Information Effective Fall 2016:  
New Filing Fee Form Deadlines: If you planning on using the Filing Fee during or after Fall 2016 you must apply in the quarter prior to when the you plan to be on Filing Fee.
If you planning on submitting a Filing Fee Form during this summer 2016 or Fall 2016 the Deadline to submit your Filing Fee form is August 23rd 2016.

If you planning on submitting a Filing Fee Form during this Spring 2016 the Deadline to submit your Filing Fee form is April 6th, 2016.

Failure to file for your Master’s Degree by the deadline will prevent the student from receiving the degree until the quarter in which the forms are filled and the student is advanced to candidacy. In addition, possible re-enrollment and having to pay registrations fees.

PhD DEGREE GRADUATION CHECKLIST

Please review the MAE PhD degree program requirements and complete the following required forms for your PhD degree:

  1. Program Requirements
  2. Program of Study (Requires the Chairman’s approval for each of your major and Minor fields)
    List your 12 courses taken with a GPA of 3.25.
  3. Nomination of Doctoral Committee (Nomination must be submitted and approved by the Graduate Division two weeks prior to taking your Oral Qualifying examination.)
  4. Preliminary Examination Scheduling Notification.
    (Nomination of Doctoral Committee must be submitted and approved by the Graduate Division two weeks prior to taking your Oral Qualifying examination.)
  5. Final Oral Examination Scheduling Notification.
  6. Dissertation Guidelines
  7. Complete MAE Exit Survey.

Degree Summary

MS Degree Summary:

At least nine courses (36 units) are required, of which at least five must be graduate courses and are required to take at least one of the courses from the ME or AE list.

In the thesis plan, seven of the nine must be formal courses, including  at least four from the 200 series. The two remaining may be 598 courses.

For the comprehensive plan, the student may select one of the following options:

  1. Take and pass the first part of the PhD written qualifying exam.
  2. Conduct a research or design project and submit a final report.
  3. Take and pass three extra examination questions offered  separately from each of the finals of three graduate courses.
  4. Take and pass an oral examination administered by the MS committee.

PhD Degree Summary:

The basic program of study for PhD degree is built around the major and minor field. The body of knowledge should include

  1. Six major field courses at least four of which must be graduate courses.
  2. One minor field.
  3. Any three additional courses, at least two of which must be graduate courses, that enhance the study of the major or minor field.
