Kuo-Nan Liou receives the 2010 COSPAR William Nordberg Medal

COSPAR (Committee on Space Research, The International Council for Science) has presented the 2010 COSPAR William Nordberg Medal to Dr. Kuo-Nan Liou, Distinguished Professor of Atmospheric Sciences and Director of the Joint Institute for Regional Earth System Science and Engineering. The medal, which is awarded every two years, recognized his “outstanding contributions to the application of space science.” Professor Liou will be honored during the inaugural ceremony of the 38th COSPAR Scientific Assembly (18-25 July 2010, Bremen, Germany) on Monday, 19 July.
A former Chair of the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, Professor Liou has been a member of the UCLA faculty since 1997 and holds a Joint appointment with the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. His scientific work spans the areas of radiative transfer theory and application, light scattering by ice crystals and aerosols, atmospheric remote sensing, and clouds/aerosols and climate. Dr. Liou is a Member of the National Academy of Engineering and currently serves as Chair of the Special Fields and Interdisciplinary Engineering Section and a Member of the Committee on Membership. He is a Member of the Academia Sinica (Chinese Academy of Sciences, Taiwan) and shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize bestowed on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
