Abstract: Three recent research topics related to the failure of composite materials will be discussed:
(1) A new methodology to assess and reduce the risk of flying aerospace composite structures that are unvented was proposed since unvented designs have led to a large number of aerospace failures.
(2) A new fracture test that was developed to measure the fracture toughness for compliant low strength materials and it was used in the assessment of advanced re-entry applications.
(3) A new thermo-mechanical coupled model for structures subject to high heating loads due to atmospheric re-entry conditions was developed. The paper was selected as the best paper at the AIAA SciTech Structures, Struc-tural Dynamics, and Materials Conference in January 2016.
The new contributions that will be discussed these three briefings are now being used in the analysis and testing of space applications.

Biosketch: Dr. Vinay Goyal is a Sr. Project Leader in the Structures Department of the Structural Mechanics Sub-division. Dr. Goyal has coordinated numerous independent assessments of space and launch systems, supported anomaly investigations, and has led multi-disciplinary teams that assessed hardware issues in support of SMC, NSG, and NASA. He has either been involved in the development of aerospace standards or participated in the modifications of standards such as SMC-025, AIAA S08A, AIAA S081B, and SMC tailoring of AIAA standards. He serves on two NASA Engineering Safety Center teams, and regularly collaborates with national laboratories and technology centers to advance thermal and structural failure technologies. He has taught graduate and under-graduate courses in MAE Dept. since 2009.
