Design and fabrication of mechanical metamaterials

Description

The aim of this research is to enable the design of non-periodic microarchitectured materials that consist of lattices of non-repeating unit cells that differ in design across the lattice’s geometry. Similar to periodic microarchitectured materials that can be designed to achieve extreme and often naturally unobtainable properties, non-periodic microarchitectured materials can also be designed to exhibit combinations of these properties but in ways that differ along desired directions within the lattice (i.e., intended anisotropy) and vary gradually across the lattice’s geometry (i.e., graded properties).
